Purpose
The Union County State’s Attorney’s Office, Jerry A. Miller, State’s Attorney, acts on behalf of the citizens of the State of South Dakota in prosecuting crimes committed in Union County.
The Union County State’s Attorney’s Office, acts on behalf of citizens of Union County as directed by the elected members of the Union County Board of Commissioners as it pertains to County issues of liability, contracting, planning and zoning, drainage, or in an matter properly before the board of commissioners.
Mission
The mission of the Union County State’s Attorney’s Office is to uphold the public trust in the pursuit of justice and the enforcement of the law.
The Union County State’s Attorney, as a constitutional officer and the public prosecutor acting on behalf of the people, is vested with the independent power to conduct prosecutions for public offenses, to detect crime and to investigate criminal activity. The State’s Attorney advises the Grand Jury in its investigations. By law, the State’s Attorney sponsors and participates in programs to improve the administration of justice.
The State’s Attorney fulfills these responsibilities through the efforts of the employees of the Office of the State’s Attorney. Each employee of the State’s Attorney’s Office shall adopt the highest standards of ethical behavior and professionalism. Each employee, moreover, is integral to achieving the mission of the Office and shares the State’s Attorney’s obligation to enhance the fundamental right of the people of Union County to a safe and just society. At all times, the mission of the State’s Attorney’s Office shall be carried out in a fair, evenhanded and compassionate manner.
